What services are provided in
the Harbor House program?
The program is comprised of two
sections;
1) Developmental
2) Life Management
· A personal Development
Plan and Life Management plan is written for each resident.
· Individual sessions
are held with each resident to track and update the plans.
How is the Harbor House Plus
Program set up to achieve the goal for residents to maintain sobriety and
move to permanent housing?
A three phase program. Each resident
moves at their own pace, addressing individual needs as defined in their
Personal Development and Life Management Plans.
· Phase 1 - Written Personal
Development and Life Management Plans. In-house groups discussing life-style
and housekeeping skills. Referrals to chemical dependency education and
physical and mental health clinics.
· Phase 2 - Updating and
revising of Personal Development and Life Management Plans. In-house group
sessions of self-assessment and job readiness. Referrals to educational
and vocational training.
· Phase 3 - Continuation
of updating and revision of Personal Development and Life Management Plans.
Seek employment, permanent housing and successful completion of the program.
What objectives are set for women
in the program?
· Maintain
their sobriety
· Build a foundation in
their recovery by attending daily in-house meeting, secure a sponsor and
build a support system.
· Complete a certified
chemical dependency treatment program.
· Ongoing participation
in the in-house groups.
· Complete an educational
and/or vocational training program.
· Secure employment sufficient
for independent living.
· Move to permanent housing.
What type of relationship is
continued after women complete the program?
· Harbor
House offers a follow up service to residents that complete the program.
· Case managers prepare
plans, which include recommendations to women to assist them in their recovery
from substance abuse, independent living, lifestyle, employment, etc.
· Home visits and telephone
contacts are scheduled for the first year after completion of the program.
What is the typical profile of
women served by Harbor House?
· Single
women or women without custody of their children, in recovery from a substance
abuse.
· Average age of women
in the program 23 to 45. Racial make-up 55% African American , 45% Caucasian.
Average of 3-4 children. 90% are single parents.
· Educational backgrounds:
most have a high school degree or a GED.
·The majority of women
in the program have a history with the criminal justice and substance abuse
systems.
· Most have neglected
their physical and mental health issues.
· Many have limited Life
Management and Personal Developmental skills.
· All are homeless and
lack a sober living environment.
Who refers women to the Harbor
House?
· Substance
abuse treatment centers.
· Criminal justice system.
· Children Services Board.
· Emergency shelters.
· Social Services agencies.
· Self-Referral.
What types of donations are accepted
at the Harbor House?
· Financial
assistance - Private donors, Grants from Government and Private Foundations,
Corporations, fund-raisers and Churches.
· In-kind donations -
Household items (i.e. cleaning supplies, dishes, cookware, silverware,
blankets, sheets, pillowcases, etc.) Personal care items (i.e. deodorant,
toothpaste, toothbrushes, soap, etc.)
